about

Somewhere between that heavenly flood warning siren in the Parallax View and a dumpster full of broken glass and spoiled Chinese food, The Night Bench was born.
With an unhealthy love for all things Rusto, Molotow, and/ or Ironlak (depending on the situation) and of murky, somewhat obnoxious music, It popped in to the world covered in blood, cheap beer, and a little bit of shit, screaming and trying to find the easiest way to get in to that train yard, on to that roof, over that fence with the laughable razor wire, and around that one morbidly obese security guard who does one lazy round every hour and ten minutes.
The Night Bench (from here on out referred to as TNB… unless we slip up) fell hard for that traveling art gallery that crisscrosses our great and confused nation, benching by day, benching by night. Becoming visibly erect at a whole ICHABOD car, or of a full GROMINATOR monster oozing across the reporting marks/ID/empty weight/ weight limits, TNB spent many a night posted up south of the Albina Yard, at the east end of the Steel Bridge, watching those giant goddamn canvases creep in and creep out, hydraulic blasts and train bells ping-ponging off of the retaining wall across from the grain silos, the sound eventually bouncing out and into that black, slowly moving river that would love to kill each and every one of us, just to see what it felt like.
This goddamn auditory disaster had to happen. It had to be made to soundtrack those lonely, Zen-like missions in hours that could only be described as ‘wee,’ searching for freights, roofs, alleys, or other places where these motherfuckers with rainbow-tinted lungs were emptying spray cans and beer cans, making the night theirs, ours, everyone’s who thought it seemed like a great idea to go for a long, meandering walk through the alleys, warehouse districts, abandoned factories, and train yards at 1 in the A.M.
This album is for all y’all, the Rattle Can Warriors, the battling crews, the Rail Jockeys waiting for the next train out, the Plaid Pantry clerks who risk their lives to sell tall beers to shady people at unholy hours. The slap taggers, dick drawers, bathroom bombers, and those artists who see a canvas where the norms just see a wall, a phone booth, a newspaper machine, or a billboard selling something that no one wants. The Night Bench tips all of the hats in all of the lands to y’all. For without this precious, largely unseen ecosystem, this adventure into nocturnal emissions would not have happened.
These sounds aren’t supposed to be pretty. They’re meant to be dark, dirty, low lit, and constantly have paint under their fingernails, no matter how much you scrub them. Fire up the bass cannons and enjoy.

Shouts to them getting or used to get up on these not so mean streets, living here or passing through:
BONUS, RAER, KOER, BATSY, GRAWK, EERIE, YELS, BELEV, ASK, ESCAPE, RASHY, NAÏVE, ANTSI, TOER, SENSE, LIFE, WINZ, START, MINK, JOINS, HONKE, PFR, HONEST, OATIS, PHOENIX, CHADS, ADZE, PHOE, JELOE, ELBOE, SLAYER, LUPE, DEAR, GIVE, PARMES, NICK, GIME, CKOS, SUCRE, KOMIK, HAPTIK, EACH, HITOP, CHUE, TRY, LUCID, GUFE, VEKS, KBAR, UTER, ANEMAL, HUMEN, ELMS, LEMUR, LUSHY, SHARK, PHOENIX, CHADS, RENT, FART, BARF, SERVER, ESEN, HOW YOU SAY, SAVEK, SMART 90, Winston the Whale, KLUTCH, SAEK, WHY, OGRE, DEPTHS, SWAMP DONKEY, GATS, LICE, YOVOY, PUKER, DFARM, ZION, QUAF, WHISTLE BLOWER, and to all the others I’ve no doubt forgotten to list, but no forgotten in my heart. Thanks for the inspiration over the years.

about

The Night Bench Portland, Oregon

Making music for those late night walks through a sleeping city. Preferred means of listening: A giant pair of headphones that you can seal yourself inside of, while wearing smaller, yet still giant 70s-style headphones, with ear buds nestled inside. Listening to any kind of music via laptop speakers is for chumps.
Thanks for listening!
