about

Man, hearing that Hardy Fox died today was strange. I mean, I didn't even know he was a Resident! That's their whole deal, right?
So learning that one of the architects of my musical evolution had passed on to a greater, wider soundscape, I was possessed to possibly commit copyright infringement as a tribute to the man who broke my brain.
I first heard the Residents at my friend Tim's house in the early/mid 90s. He played Duck Stab for me, and I had no idea what the hell was happening. It was silly, spooky, fucked up, alien, familiar, and something that my ears were not prepared for. Hell, how COULD they be prepared for these sounds? Even today, decades on, and being as familiar with this music as I am with my own scarred hands, it still sounds like something I've never heard before.
I admit, I drifted away from them at around Freak Show. The sound became too pure, too clean. It was still delightfully twisted, but the old analog hiss and damage that was such a part of my love for them was gone.
I still appreciated them, and I still need them to be a part of this world. They made me who I am today, musically (take that as you will) and they are one of the keystones to the doorways that make up the hallways I travel through, confused, when making the sounds that I make today.
Hardy Fox, I didn't know you, and I didn't know that you were an eyeball. Hell, maybe even THEE eyeball. But I thank you for all of the adventures and absurdity, nightmares and freak outs, Zen moments and straight up music terrorism that you brought forth in to this world. These versions were made out of love, out of a loss that I didn't know I was going to experience. Please tell your friends not to sue me.
Everyone else, go listen to "Duck Stab." DO IT NOW!
Yours,
Daniel Q. Night Bench III, esq.

about

The Night Bench Portland, Oregon

Making music for those late night walks through a sleeping city. Preferred means of listening: A giant pair of headphones that you can seal yourself inside of, while wearing smaller, yet still giant 70s-style headphones, with ear buds nestled inside. Listening to any kind of music via laptop speakers is for chumps.
Thanks for listening!
